Correspondence
Literally, the amateur is one who studies a topic not - like the professional - in order to stage a career, but for the love of it, motivated by a sense of care, personal involvement and responsibility. Amateurs are correspondents. And in study they find a way of life that harmonizes with their whole way of living in the world. Admittedly, this appeal to amateurism is not wihtout its pitfalls, especially in a political climate in which professional expertise is routinely dismissed as the posturing of a technocratic elite more interested in showing up their own status and pivilege than in listening to the common sense of ordinary, unlettered folk. Something must be added to our definition of what it means to be an amateur, lest we risk a descent into crude populism.
Framing this website with insights from Tim Ingold’s Correspondences, I do in the spirit of mandate towards my own practice and reflection on my existnet work. I aim to contribute towards a collective meaning of what to correspond means from an artist perspective, being mindful to adapt an inclusive approach towards all others who will take the time to go through my work or text. I do not want to abuse my art by creating impressions of privilage and thereby exlusion. Art is for everyone, and I am thrilled when people take time to stop and consider. This section will contain some insights into how I correspond in life through my way of art.
